The origin and history of Linux:

Linux comes from a variety of people but the main architect was Linus Torvlads from the University if Helsinki. He uploaded some code to a public forum and everyone put there ideas to make it better. Torvalds got some help from other popular programs at that time called MINIX which is a form of UNIX. These two software helped Linus get started on his LINUX project. The first LINUX version was the 0.01 released in Sept. 1991. By the end of the year there were 10 versions of Linux and they only got better.

What are Linux Distributions? Name and describe two Linux distributions.

Linux Distributions are members of Unix- like software that are built on top of Linux kernels. They consist of many programs like spreadsheets, media players, and others that have utilities from Linux kernel. Two Linux distributions are Mandriva and Fedora. Mandriva was created in 1998 by Gael Duval and is based on Red Hat. Its uses rpm based management that enhances with a tool called urpmi. Mandriva is easy to use and is highly updated, sometimes the updates have bugs but they get fixed right away. Fedora is focused on the business side of the computers. It is made by Res Hat one of the most and best known Linux companies. It is a stable and secure system that mixes unique leading edge features.

Describe 2 ways to get Linux distributions. How are Linux distributions installed?

You can buy a computer that already comes installed with the Linux system or you can get a cd/dvd that has the program and install it that way. It’s installed by a cd that you put in your computer that has the uploading program on there. Just put it in and follow the directions.

Describe 2 popular user applications/suites for Linux.

One popular app is Open source. It offers all the same capabilities as windows office like word processor, spreadsheets, and a drawing program. The only difference is that it is free and you can download it from a website. A popular suite is GParted it uses libparted to detect and manipulate devices and partition tables.

Describe one advantage and one disadvantage of Linux compared to Microsoft Windows?

A disadvantage to having Linux is its compatibility. Linux does not have corporate backing so it may fall behind the curve in new hard ware. The contributors and maintainers to there best to keep everything up to date, so at times you may find applications and you may not. On the upside, one of the biggest advantages especially now a day is that it’s free to obtain. You can install a Linux distribution on any number of computers without paying anything, were with Microsoft you have licenses that only allow one install for a hefty price.
